A column in the garden

The name comes from architecture. Pilotis are the thin columns that lift Rationalist buildings off the ground so the volume above seems to float. Rodolfo Dordoni, Minotti's art director since 1998, took that single element and turned it into a table: a closed cylinder with nothing to assemble and no visible joint on the top. Seen from above it reads as a disc. From the side it reads as a short column standing on grass or paving, so it looks best with a little air around it, set a step away from the sofa.

The material is stainless steel, so rust is not the worry it would be with plain iron. What changes from piece to piece is the surface. The steel goes through an oxidation process before it is varnished, and that process never lands the same way twice, so the Corten version shows its own pattern of warm browns and the cobalt blue version its own depth of color. Two owners with the same model will not have identical tables. For a buyer who wants a set of perfectly matching objects, that is worth knowing before ordering.

Because the top is small, Pilotis holds a glass, a book or a candle. Plates for a meal belong on a bigger surface. The two heights let you pair a low one with a lounge chair and a taller one beside a deeper sofa, or cluster the pair so their tops step down. Larger Minotti coffee tables can take over the serving job, while this one fills the gap next to a seat. In a garden with iroko or teak seating, the rusty Corten tone sits close to the wood, and the blue stands out against it.
