Brutalist base in teak

Block is a single piece that does one job well. The indoor Block table has a base shaped from a block of solid wood, and outdoors that same heavy volume is made in natural teak. Seen from the end, the base forms an L or an inverted T, a profile that makes the table read as sculpture from across the terrace. It is made in two heights, both with a rectangular top.

Teak is a natural choice outside because its oils help it shed water. Left unoiled it turns silver gray, and regular oiling keeps more of the warm brown. The stone top is Pietra del Cardoso, and its weight keeps the table steady in wind. The other option is a white glossy top in lacquered HPL, a high-pressure laminate that wipes clean and gives a smoother, plastic look.

In a lounge area, Block works as the one heavy object among lighter seating. Put it in front of a sofa with an open cord back and the contrast of solid wood against woven fiber becomes the whole composition. It is the coffee table Minotti built around mass, and the two heights mean a pair can be set side by side at different levels to hold books, drinks and plants.

Rodolfo Dordoni, Minotti's art director since 1998, took from Brutalism the habit of showing raw volume without decoration. The smooth, pebble-like edge of the top offsets that weight. For a modern house with concrete walls or stone paving, the table picks up the same direct materials outside, and it can sit on a covered porch or in open sun without changing its character.
